Murderous pirates? Indian massacres? Battles over land? There are many tall tales about how Bloody Point, the southernmost tip of Kent Island, got its name. Shaun and I both grew up in the Kent Island area and over the years we have heard nearly a dozen different stories about how the name came to be.
Sunday morning we were reminiscing about past fishing adventures and the ones that ‘got away’. One of our best fishing spots, ironically, is off of Bloody Point. We got into a debate about the origin of the name and which of the centuries-old stories was most accurate. There’s the tale of the pirate that was hung for murdering three crew members, the story of colonists massacring an Indian tribe, and the account of a fierce battle between landowners that ended in bloodshed.
Which of these is true? We may never know for sure, but we do know one thing- having such a brain-straining discussion before noon should be rewarded with an adult beverage! Shaun loves Bloody Mary’s and they often make an appearance at our brunch table. This time, as a nod to our debate about Bloody Point, he mixed up a ‘Mary with a Chesapeake twist. The ‘Bloody Point’ Mary features all of the juicy tomato flavors found in a traditional Mary, but the spices, Old Bay seasoning, and fresh crispy garnishes transform it into something extra special.
Though we may never unlock the secrets of Bloody Point’s past, we do know that this drink is one that would be worthy of the fiercest pirate or cannonball crazed colonist. Bottoms up!
The ‘Bloody Point’ Mary
3oz vodka (we use Absolut)
3/4 cup tomato juice
Ice cubes, enough to fill your glass halfway
½ tsp Worcestershire sauce
4 generous dashes of hot sauce
½ tsp Old Bay seasoning
2 pinches of freshly ground black pepper
Juice from ¼ lemon
Juice from ¼ lime
½ tsp horseradish
Sweet baby Gerken pickles
Lemon & lemon juice
Old Bay seasoning
Add ice to your glass, pour vodka over ice.
Add all other ingredients to your glass.
Using a separate (but similar sized) glass; mix the drink by inverting it several times between the two glasses. Once mixed, keep drink in the second glass and set aside.
To rim your glass, squeeze a little bit of lemon juice onto a plate. Gently swirl the top of your glass into the lemon juice. On a separate plate, sprinkle some Old Bay seasoning. Once the rim is coated in lemon juice, slowly swirl the rim into the Old Bay seasoning until there is a light coating around the entire edge of the glass.
Once your glass is rimmed with Old Bay, pour drink mixture and ice back into the glass.
Garnish with cherry tomatoes, pepperoncinis, celery, lemon, sweet baby Gerkin pickles, or other garnish of your choice.
